Day 17 - Burgos - 18 September, 2014

Rest Day
Feelings: Henk - Very relaxed, Neil - Very relaxed, Di - Relaxed

Burgos was a lovely place for a rest day. It is large, has plenty to see and had many eating places from which to choose.

We met at eight o'clock for breakfast and enjoyed it as we didn't have to rush. From the large breakfast room window we could see the many pilgrims slowly making their way out of the city. By coincidence I happened to look out when  our fellow Aussies, Lyn and Alan, were going past so I waved and gave them the thumbs up for Buen Camino. Henk and Neil joined me and we were all pleased to see each other. We have been in synch with Lyn and Alan for over a week. Hopefully, we will see them further along the way.

When we set out to see the city it was quite cool and we think Autumn has arrived. Burgos is 900 metres above sea level and it does get snow in winter. We had no plans for the day and enjoyed walking around the old city centre in the morning and stopping when something interested us.

The place only seemed to start to come to life after ten o'clock. Burgos has many modern sculptures representing its citizens planted throughout the city. One was dedicated to the Camino walkers and was a tired man sitting at a bench.

On Neil's wanderings he found a great place to have tasty tapas for lunch. We sat at a bench looking out onto a narrow street which also happened to be part of the Camino Way. Quite a few walkers went past with varying degrees of  energy, no doubt looking for their accommodation and looking forward to having the afternoon off.

Before dinner we walked the narrow streets in the cool evening. It was very pleasant.

The challenge was to find a place for dinner which had reasonable prices and served dinner earlier rather than from eight thirty, nine o'clock or later! We need our dinner earlier so we can get a good night's sleep. We ended up going back to where we had dinner last night as they served good local food at an earlier time. We also had a good view over the Plaza de Santa Maria and the local people promenading.  We enjoyed the city's dish, morcilla de Burgos or blood sausage for entrĂ©e. Burgos has the reputation as having the best in Spain. It was very tasty and is made of pork blood, rice and spices.

It was a good rest day.
